Irvin F Nelson, 79, of 702 Gateway Village,
Sturgis, died 7 January 1997 in Kalamazoo. He was born 9 March 1917, in Detroit, a
son of Lester A and Eloda May (Browning) Nelson. On 11 June 1938, he married
Doris M Bunnell in Sturgis, He made his home in Sturgis for the past 58 years,
since moving here from Detoit. A veteran of WWII, he served in Germany and
received a Purple Heart for injuries received in action. He was employed by the
National Carbon Coated Paper Company and was foreman of the press room
when he retired in 1969. Then he was employed for Holiday Inn as a desk clerk
for eight years. In 1976 he was voted "Mr Hospitality" and was honored by being
in the Michigan Week Parade. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church,
a member of the Jack Johnston D.A.V. Chapter #88 of Sturgis, and served
for seven years as an advisor for Junion Achievement. Surviving are
his wife, one son, Irvin G Nelson of Burr Oak; two daughters and
sons-in-law, Mary Lou and Jack Sears of Mendon and Kathleen and
Richard Yeckley of Sturgis; five grandchildren, Jack L Sears, Jr of
Mendon, Cynthia Brundige of Vicksburg, Matthew Sears of Three
Rivers, Kimberlee Hart of Burr Oak, Jeremy Nelson of Burr Oak; 12 great-
grandchildren; one half brother, Lester A Nelson Jr of Detroit; and several nieces
and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Loretta May;
and two brothers, Robert A. and James Nelson. Services were at the Trinity
Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Hoehner and the Rev Cal Kolzow
officiating. Burial will be in Burr Oak Cemetery with full military honors by the
Capt. John J Kelley V.F.W. Post #1335
